«ATOMEXPO 2024» will discuss the unique capabilities of research reactors in the implementation of non-energy projects

25 March
On March 25, as part of the «XIII International Forum ATOMEXPO-2024» in Sochi, a round table will be held on the topic “Unique capabilities of research reactors in the implementation of non-energy projects.” The event will be held with the support of LLC Leader of the MCI MBIR Consortium.

The panellists will be: Ortensia Jimenez, Director General of the Bolivian Atomic Energy Agency (ABEN); Ilkhom Sadikov, Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Science of the Republic of Uzbekistan; Sergei Shcherbakov, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Physical and Technical Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; Erbolat Koyanbaev, Deputy Director for Materials Science Research, Institute of Atomic Energy, National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Fidel Ndahayo, Director General of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Commission, and others. The discussion will be moderated by Lachezar Kostov, Vice-Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR).

The round table will discuss the prospects for creating global international scientific platforms and the implementation of national projects for the construction of research reactors, as well as positioning Russia as a partner offering comprehensive solutions for countries developing nuclear energy. The Rosatom State Corporation will present a report on the construction of the unique MBIR research facility.

The round table will take place in conference room No. 6 of the Main Media Center (Sirius Park of Science and Arts), starting at 16:30.

For reference:

A multi-purpose fast neutron research reactor (MBIR) is being built in the city of Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region, on the basis of JSC “SSC RIAR”, as part of the comprehensive program “Development of equipment, technologies and scientific research in the field of use of atomic energy in the Russian Federation”. The lead scientific organization for the construction of the reactor is the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering named after. A. I. Leypunsky (SSC RF - IPPE, part of the scientific division of Rosatom). The International Research Center (ICRC) MBIR is being created on the basis of the reactor under construction. Its scientific group will include Russian and foreign specialists, and the Center’s activities will be coordinated by the consortium “International Center for Research Based on the MBIR Reactor.”

It is assumed that the MBIR will replace the BOR-60 reactor, which is widely in demand today, which has been operating at the site of the State Scientific Center RIAR for more than half a century. The new reactor will provide the nuclear industry with technologically advanced research infrastructure for the next 50 years.

During the construction of the MBIR, the best existing technologies of the State Corporation Rosatom and new management approaches are used - a consortium model of construction management. Integrated remote monitoring tools are used on a full scale: photography from unmanned aerial vehicles, laser scanning. Thanks to the technologies used and the close interaction between scientists and builders, the construction of the MBIR is ahead of schedule.

«The ATOMEXPO International Forum» is the main event of the global nuclear industry, the largest exhibition and business platform where the current state of the nuclear industry is discussed and trends for its further development are formed. Conducted since 2009. The forum is attended by heads of key companies in the global nuclear industry, government agencies, international and public organizations, and leading experts. The forum format includes an exhibition and congress with an extensive business program, the main event of which is the plenary session. Panel discussions and round tables discuss topics that are most important for the nuclear industry. Leading companies in the global nuclear industry and related industries present their technologies and competencies at the exhibition.

The comprehensive program “Development of equipment, technologies and scientific research in the field of use of atomic energy in the Russian Federation” (KP “RTTN”) was developed by the State Corporation “Rosatom” together with the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. It includes the development of new advanced technologies and materials, samples of new equipment, technical re-equipment, construction of unique complexes and infrastructure facilities in the field of nuclear energy and control of thermonuclear fusion reactions, as well as low-power nuclear plants. In April 2022, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, it was extended until 2030.

Russian industry faces the goal of ensuring technological sovereignty and the transition to the latest technologies in the shortest possible time. The state and large domestic companies are directing resources to accelerate the development of the domestic research, infrastructure, scientific and technological base.
